Jennings makes the zoo his refuge because the zoo was a safe pick up for him and the animals were also caged. Some of the events that forced him to resort t o the zoo are: the homes he went to where cruel, the foster homes where each not good or the multitude couldnt keep him because of legal fences, and because he couldnt go home. I say that one of the reasons that he ran to the zoo is because the homes werent the best because in the home of the angels Sister Barbara shouted at him and smacked him.

Then at the next home he went to there was a new kid who spilled his coco and he took the knock and and then Sister Frances picked him up, smacked him across the face, dragged him across the floor, and then threw him in the closet. Another reason that I said is because the people couldnt keep him. Almost at the end of the book he! runs away again and he gets picked up by an military officer named Dailey. He got to stay with them and he didnt indispensability to apply but he heard a conversation he had with his captain and then the one with his married woman too so he knew that if he stayed that officer Dailey would lose his job.
